The hint of smoke in the sky made for a spectacular red/purple/pink sunset. Knee high waves on a 5.5' high tide. Used to be unrideable, now I crave it!

It was all north wind slop, but at least there was something to knock you around a little bit. Conditions were almost victory-at-sea, but just clean enough to mess around on a boogie board. It was also big enough that you couldn't see the next wave coming until you got to the top the wave bearing down on you. It was one of those days where you have to search for the power pockets a bit and connect the dots. I didn't expect much and ended up with a pretty fun time and good workout with all the paddling and duck diving.

It was one of those the classic summer morning cleanup sessions. Light offshores and very clean stomach high sets that were holding up as nice little walls -- perfect for the Bing Trimulux. The 4A I have on it is such a killer match: loose enough to cut some tight little turns on a smaller wave face but still confident and controlled feeling with some drive when you need it. The more I ride the Trimulux, the more I like it and wonder why I don't see more people riding them. The wind shifted within the hour but it stayed fun and crumbly for a little while. Fun times.

I took out my 10 ft Wilson Butternut. I hadn't ridden that board in almost two years, and what a difference that two years made in my skill level and ability to ride it. Whereas in the past I was constantly nosediving, I have now started to master the angled takeoff and had some really fun rides. I also did something I have never done before -- I stayed on a high line and right inside the pocket. I fell off when I tried to get up on the nose, but it was a very different feeling from the rides I have been getting on my Austin stubby, which, for me, tends to outrun the wave. I think at 10ft that board is a little more than I need, but had lots of fun and looking forward to next weekend, when I can ride it some more.

Then, red eye home, bus and Uber to Cape Cod and multiple sessions of short period wind swell. Good weekend.

Funny how a little time and more experience can give you new perspective on a board. Keep at it with that Butternut. You may be surprised how much you might grow into it.

We've had nothing but NE wind slop lately, but it has really warmed the water up. It hasn't really been worth surfing, but I do like it sloppy and choppy on a bodyboard. I've had off this week, so I enjoyed a solid three days in a row of 2+ hour sessions. Today's my badly needed rest day. It's been surprisingly bigger than it looks with quite a bit of water moving around out there. I saw a lifeguard rescue yesterday from the outside looking in -- kind of interesting how quiet and devoid of fanfare it was. Most people on the beach didn't even notice what was going on.

Low tide into high this evening. Best its been in awhile.
100794 486 How was your surf today?....share your stoke! 2616 Nilus Aug 4, 2016 2016-08-04T11:54:26-0400 I've been logging some time on the Skip Eagle over the last month, but this morning I found a new gear at C Street ... I had already grabbed a bunch of glassy waist to chest waves (largely in the vicinity of the fairgrounds farther out than everyone else in that stretch). Then, with the tide filling in and a little more of the new south swell showing, I found myself paddling out to a nice line beyond me. It took a few more strokes to get into, which should have told me something, and as I was about to drop in, I realized I was pretty late and it was getting relatively steep. Now I'm always a little tentative with this board because it's big, flat, and unforgiving. I am just an average surfer, so I also feel super conspicuous on a Skipper ... like somehow I have to continually earn my right to ride it. All of this is going through my head in the two seconds I'm paddling. Did I mention that the board is the brightest shade of yellow you've ever seen, and that I also happen to be wearing my Matuse suit with a yellow stripe across the chest? So yeah, pretty much everyone sitting farther in is watching this transpire unless they're fricking blind. But somehow, as I drop in really late, the rail just hooks up and the board accelerates like crazy across the face. People are making noise as I scream by. The wave is feathering above me the whole way. And the eagle just keeps going faster and faster, barely staying ahead of the whitewater. Later, a guy said "that wave was WAY overhead." If true, it was substantially bigger than anything else I saw before or after. One of those weird sneakers. Anyway, I now know what it's like to stand on the wing of an airplane. And I want to do it again.

Figures my rest day is the best day. I'm out for sure today, but hopefully I'll find some time to sneak out over the next few days. Nilus: Awesome! We've probably all had that moment when you're in the hot seat for the wave of the day, everyone is watching, and you'll either end up a king or a kook.

We had waves for the first time in a while this AM. Lumpy, bumpy, drifty peaks with light side offshore winds. At least something to ride on a clear morning with warm water. Sound like the Skipper is working.

Chilly - Went down to IBSP yesterday and did bring a board with me it was definitely a NE wind slop mess, but warm water, so I was in there. got a couple of rideable waves and I mean 1 or 2. Didn't get a shot today either, though it looked much better/cleaner. No shot for me to get out again until next week now. Hope the water stays warm, and another little swell arrives???

Stoked we had several rideable days in a row - which has been rare this summer. Board gets better and better each session. Was thigh plus with a decent line. The push has faded and it was mushy, but at 83 degrees it was nice. Lot's of sharks out there this week. Some were pretty big...

Right off the bat, I got a fun little micro-barrel and said to myself under my breath: "Nice!" A half hour or so later, an old lady swam out and started bodysurfing near me. She was shamelessly dropping in on me every time, and she wasn't even noticing me. Of course, I started getting a bit annoyed. It all came to a head when I was coming down the line at a pretty good clip, and she flops down in front of me once again. I had to turn pretty sharply, causing me to spray her square in the face with the water coming off my rail (accidentally, honest). We both washed up right around the same place, and I hear her say to herself in a low voice: "Nice!" (She was stoked about her ride.) Ahh man, I felt bad for being annoyed by her. This old lady was just as stoked as I was. I guess all of us waveriders really are cut from the same cloth. Whether you're gliding in on a longboard, pulling into some sandy little barrels on a sponge, or coasting in on your belly, it's all about mining the stoke and just having some fun riding waves.

G is a great guy and we've had many a fun session, usually with Matsurfer, but that day it was only the two of us. Despite it being a nice July day with a bit of swell in the water, the late-morning First Point traffic was minimal. I brought the Insta-Stoke special (the TMartin 11') and he brought his new 10'0" Phillips Blunt Nose SWT. We got wave after wave since the crowd towards the top of FP was mellow and, after a while, we switched boards. I loved riding that SWT and he clearly dug the Martin, which he clicked with right away and killed on multiple waves. It wasn't big--waist/belly with set waves that were chest-shoulder high--but it was clean and it was fun. Post-sesh, the perfect food and drink were had: combo plates with al pastor and fish tacos (me) and a fat burrito (G) and fine Mexi-suds at Tacos Por Favor which happens to be in the former site of Dave Sweet Surfboards at 14th street and Olympic in Santa Monica. Don't hesitate if you're in the area: http://tacosporfavor.net/ I'm looking forward to coming up again in October for what's only going to be a brief visit but it's always worth it. Hope to catch up with some of you, especially those whom I haven't gotten to see on the last couple trips north. Cheers and continue sharing your aloha. Eric Attached files

We went on vacation to Italy last week, in the Cique Terres (insane by the way, great hiking, snorkeling, wine...)and after a long drive we get to Levanto and I'm thinking I need to go for a swim. We walk down to the beach... And it's shoulder high! Most waves a bit mushy but every third or fourth set, a head high wall would push through that looked really fun. Of course, I hadn't brought a board on this trip, but I ended up body surfing with my kids who were stoked to be catching waves in northern Italy.

Last Tuesday was excellent: shoulder high, glassy and uncrowded. Thursday was bigger, heavy current, but very fun long lefts and just three of us on a peak. Then today, get to the beach in the fog, looking at a bunch of close-out nearly shorebreak. Spoke to a friend who was heading home a bit disgusted after two hours of nada (got there late today, a rare occurance!). Paddled out, confirmed his suspicion, went in after twenty minutes and spoke with a buddy. Decdided to paddle way out to a funny looking sort of wave that just peaked up and then quickly dissapeared. More for the paddle than anything else since it was nice and glassy. Sun came out, peak started holding on the super low tide, long walls that reformed several times without really breaking started coming through regularly. Funny and fun waves, carving big turns on waves that went towards the beach without a lot of lateral, down the line surfing. Carve, back into the peak, carve or roundhouse, back into the peak... Got a bunch of these for an hour until others figured we were faving too much fun and came out and we split. Nice morning.

I brought my beloved Phillips pig to the beach and yanked on the board bag's zipper -- yank -- yank -- yank -- nothing. It was salted shut. Dang. The waves were closing out anyway, so I paddled out on the boog. The waves were so so, but I had a great moment where a huge pod of dolphins swam right through the lineup and pretty much all around me for several minutes. There were a bunch of babies in there as well, kind of playfully flopping around. None surfaced right next to me, but I could see the swirling water on both sides of me close enough to reach out and touch them if they had surfaced. Awesome. Overall, it turned a so-so surf session into a pretty memorable one.

Took my Andreini Pig out for the first time since leaving the mecca of Southern California surf. I don't get in the water much due to work and commitments and was stoked to get the invite. Wasn't epic per California standards, but caught a couple of the best waves I have had since I moved. That made it one heck of a session.

I had declared my full intentions to drive down south to a place where the waves are nice, but I ended up getting stuck replacing my fence gate -- a project that took way longer than expected. There may be a pet dog in our future, so it was a priority project. It's okay, there are always other days... BUT it still always hurts your soul to look at the surf cam on a day when you wanted to go but couldn't make it and people are scoring some pretty sweet rides. #thatshouldbeme

I watched the offshore winds on the cam all day, but wouldn't you know it, the wind switched to south as soon as I got there. It was still very fun though and bigger than I expected it to be -- shoulder high sets with even some bigger ones rolling in about an hour before high tide. It was a nice change of pace to take off on a wave and actually get to travel downward a bit before bottom turning!

Last week, you could only surf at dead high tide due to the impossibly shallow sandbar stretching the length of the town. I showed up yesterday morning to hit the 9:30 AM high tide, but the nice lines rolling in weren't even breaking. I waited around for two hours thinking it might turn around. I saw a scrawny little fox running along the dunes while I waited, and I even made a trip back over the bridge and back to get some donuts and coffee -- but no dice on the waves. I came back later around low tide (foolishly without my surfboard thinking it would be too shallow) and saw beautiful rib-high crumbling lines rolling in with a guy on a longboard gracefully cruising and cutting some nice, fluid turns all the way from the outside and ending up way inside. The NE slop clearly redistributed the sand bars into a much better configuration. I scrambled back to my car and ran home for my board. I'm so glad I ran home. I rode my Phillips pig for two hours and had a blast, especially when the nip-high sets would roll in. What a simple pleasure to have a nice open face and carving a nice cutback with that board. I surfed for a while with one of my coworkers, which was nice and better than surfing alone. We had drifted down a block over those two hours, but my last wave was a long one that took me the entire block back to where we started. Perfect.
