100009 2799 Costa Rica Trip 1 Surfin64 Jul 25, 2016 2016-07-25T10:28:26-0400 Planning for The JW Marriot in Guanacaste. Any tips/ideas for surfing/sightseeing the area? One week, family, no rental car. Surfing with my 14yo son. Playa Avellanas looks walking distance (10 min) to the south. Tamarindo to the north but would have to be by shuttle I would guess. Any surf out front of the resort? Now we have to watch out for gators...sheesh. Bad enough here in CA lately with the sea creatures. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jeff

100018 2799 Costa Rica Trip 3 TonyPR Jul 25, 2016 2016-07-25T10:45:42-0400 Avellanas is fun, fun, fun! Lot's of peaks everywhere, have the poke ceviche at the restaurant with the huge pig(don't know if it's still there). Playa Negra can be hardcore but if you have the skills it's a good barrel. Don't care much for Tamarindo because it's too touristy but maybe I am spoiled(was there in 1993 before it became a tourist town). If you can extend the trip or have the time to take 2 days visit the Arenal volcanoe, it's a unique experience to watch an active volcano at night, you probably need a car but driving in CR is pretty safe if you stay on the road. As I always say and people never do: post photos when you get back.
100019 2798 Tamarindo 6 TonyPR Jul 25, 2016 2016-07-25T10:55:09-0400 With crocodiles we are on the menu, surfed Tivives with a tico friend and a fellow boricua, water was murky and rain had logs and branches floating around. If my friends both caught waves and I was left outside alone waiting for a set those floating logs started to look very suspicious. When we got back to my tico friend's parents house his father started screaming at him "por qué los llevaste a Tivives, sabes que un coco se comió a un ****** la semana pasada en ese mismo lugar!!!"
10002 80 San O' Weekend 2007 68 surflugen Jul 26, 2007 2007-07-26T07:01:55-0400 I heard the same thing that they are going to start cracking down on alcohol on the beach. Contrary to everyones belief, it is illegal to have alcohol on the beach or in the parking lot in public as it is not a camp ground, but it was rarely ever enforced unless someone gets out of control. I hear that the warnings are coming down to let everyone know they will start citing people this summer becuase they are trying to curb the underage drinking. It has been getting worse and getting the beach in trouble with the state because kids getting busted drunk are telling the cops they got drunk down at San O for which they only see as someone was "contributing to a minor."

100022 2799 Costa Rica Trip 4 Chilly Willy Jul 25, 2016 2016-07-25T11:31:04-0400 Very nice! I was at the Westin in Playa Conchal for my honeymoon in 2012. Super nice. No surf where I was, but we took a shuttle to Tamarindo one day so I could squeeze in a little surf session. We did a fun little excursion one day: zip lines, horseback riding, hot springs, and a crazy waterslide through the jungle where you have to wear a helmet and a rubber diaper to ride it. We still talk about that waterslide. Surprisingly, the best part was the horseback ride. Besides clomping through streams on some really neat, tight rain forest trails, it was my first time on a horse and was a lot more fun than I thought it would be controlling the big beast. I think the excursion was called Buena Vista if you want to look it up. The cool thing about Costa Rica is that there's plenty to do and you can have a much or as little adventure as you'd like. Have fun!
100027 2799 Costa Rica Trip 5 Surfin64 Jul 25, 2016 2016-07-25T12:09:40-0400 Thanks slideright. If the shuttle will get us there then tamarindo river mouth looks fun. Isn't that where the recent croc attack was? If so... maybe we may want to pass. Tony I believe you are talking about Lola's (pig/restaurant) which is on our to do list. I hear Avellanas is a nice mix of different waves/bottoms. We'll check out the feasibility of a trip to the volcano. Chilly thanks for the info. I am pretty sure my wife was talking about a tour just like what you described. We'll definitely find out more. More questions: Are booties/ankle high reef shoes a good or necessary item to pack? It seems the breaks are a combo or sand, volcanic rock and reef. Also, my son rides a short board so he's set. How would a 7'6" do for his old man? Thanks guys!

10003 134 Why do some folks skip waxing the nose? 1 Surfertom Jul 26, 2007 2007-07-26T08:43:27-0400 Seeing the other string about the wax designs and the pics there that show some boards with no wax on the nose of the board sparked me starting this topic. I "guess" I understand not waxing the nose on a short board (I used to anyway), but I REALLY don't get not waxing the nose area on a long board. Even if you don't ride the nose, you do have to grip it there occasionally and I can't imagine just leaving it slick. Let us know if you do, don't and if you don't, why the heck not? ST
100032 2799 Costa Rica Trip 6 xyzzy Jul 25, 2016 2016-07-25T12:46:41-0400 I've never taken booties. Don't cross the river on foot in Tamarindo. The rivermouth is a nice right with swell on incoming tide. Otherwise Playa Grande to the north (again, dont cross the rivermouth on foot.. there's pangas that will shuttle you across), or as other mentioned Avellanas. There is a pig is there but its not the same pig (Lola)
100034 2800 California - Second weekend in October 1 NJ Longboarder Jul 25, 2016 2016-07-25T13:19:59-0400 Flying out to watch old cars race on the beach in October. http://theraceofgentlemen.com/ All past trips have be into LAX and south so we are flying into San Fransisco to mix it up a bit and driving south. No exact plans yet, except to be in/around Pismo Beach Saturday/Sunday. Coming out early Friday and leaving Tuesday. Thinking about camping or renting an RV. Any good places to rent boards or what craigslist region should I search? Probably just drive around to find decent waves. Shouldn't be too hard. Anyone have any tips? Where to stay? Good food and/or drink spots? Wetsuits needed?
100035 2801 shark attacked a seal in the line up yesterday.. 1 Stef Jul 25, 2016 2016-07-25T13:20:41-0400 Kinda weird because I haven't seen anything of a shark that attacked and killed a seal in the line up yesterday other than 2 friends posts on FB. No news or anything... we have been having a few sightings a week it seems for the past few weeks, the news has been right there - but now we actually had an attack / encounter and now nothing... For the norcal peeps, I was walking down to the south end of linda mar beach to paddle out and I saw everyone ( 40+ people ) getting out of water. I saw my neighbor and asked what's happening shark ? he said yeah, one just attacked a seal and there was a huge pool of blood out there....
100036 2800 California - Second weekend in October 2 Stef Jul 25, 2016 2016-07-25T13:24:16-0400 pat, hit me up - I will hook you up with boards, I can set you in the direction to rent a suit and give you the low down on waves in my area (pacifica is 10 minutes south of san Francisco and about an hour north of santa cruz )
100038 2802 Bing Pintail Lightweight 1 newlyn Jul 25, 2016 2016-07-25T14:16:36-0400 My search for a new board has, admittedly, been dragging on forever. By way of recap, I started surfing three years ago, I am 41, 5'10 and about 190 lbs. I surf exclusively NJ beach break. I have been doing well with my 8'2 Austin stubby, and I am looking for something a bit longer to get into waves earlier. At the same time, I want something that will be somewhat forgiving on steep drops, so a bit of extra nose rocker perhaps. I don't have any real aspirations to become a noserider (although I do try to shuffle up there every once in a while), so I think a somewhat narrower nose would be better for me. I am hard on decks, so I am looking for something durable. I was close to buying an epoxy popout magic model, but just couldn't bring myself to do it. So, now I am looking at an extra-volan glassed Bing Pintail Lightweight. The board is definitely heavy, so the "lightweight" is a misnomer. Dimensions are 9'8" x 23 1/8 x 3 3/16. Advice and reviews appreciated. Also, curious how the Bing 3 stringer compares. Much appreciated.
100039 2799 Costa Rica Trip 7 TonyPR Jul 25, 2016 2016-07-25T14:20:17-0400 7'6" midlength would be great, there are waves for all types of wave vehicles.

100040 2800 California - Second weekend in October 3 joeblackuz Jul 25, 2016 2016-07-25T14:22:42-0400 Also Im not sure about other cities law but in Los Angeles city overnight parking is now legal on the street if you get an RV. So that might be worth checking out. Also sent a PM.
100041 2802 Bing Pintail Lightweight 2 TonyPR Jul 25, 2016 2016-07-25T14:28:14-0400 I like riding longboards and to me the best design for steep beach break is a high performance longboard built for hawaiian style waves. https://youtu.be/isU6n7KpLAQ Now if it's not top to bottom then any log would do fine...
100042 2802 Bing Pintail Lightweight 3 xyzzy Jul 25, 2016 2016-07-25T14:28:49-0400 I like something more in the 9'4 range for beach breaks where you need to be ok in the slightly overhead range. I think the Bing PTLW is a good choice. There's countless options I like a Takayama DT-1 outline for size. If you're going to want to get into bigger than 2-3 foot surf (shoulder/head high), I think the 9'8 becomes unmanageable logarithmically with size. You're not going to be wanting to be taking on steep drops regardless, just get in early at a good tack. My $0.02
100043 2756 So.... How old is everyone? 131 Knots Jul 25, 2016 2016-07-25T14:28:51-0400 50 in September Aloha
100045 2801 shark attacked a seal in the line up yesterday.. 2 xyzzy Jul 25, 2016 2016-07-25T14:37:00-0400 What time was this? I've been out there every morning at dawn.... today was good surf too,.. lots of bait in the water, but havent seen anything. The news report of someone seeing a "six foot white shark jump a couple hundred yards out" last week is dubious at best
100046 2802 Bing Pintail Lightweight 4 newlyn Jul 25, 2016 2016-07-25T14:43:46-0400 Shoulder high is about the biggest I encounter, at least at my current skill level.
100047 2802 Bing Pintail Lightweight 5 Surfnfish Jul 25, 2016 2016-07-25T14:53:28-0400 Tail rocker is what makes a longboard work well in steeper beachbreak. When you weight your rear foot on the jump-up, it lifts the nose via the tail rocker, and keeps the board loose for turning as you go down the line. A 9'8 is a long board for someone your height to manage in pitching style waves, probably adding just a foot would be plenty. If you like your Austin, why not talk to him about this next board? And can get plenty of deck strength in a double 6 deck with a rear half deck patch without having to deal with the extra weight of Volan.
100048 2802 Bing Pintail Lightweight 6 SReilly Jul 25, 2016 2016-07-25T14:55:42-0400 If you want to stay way out on the shoulder and cruise around then stick with with the 9' plus suggestions. But if you want to surf bigger waves , shoulder/head, get the 8' PTLW. Or other Mids in the 7 to 8' range. Your 41, not 81. Take some risk and through yourself in the pocket. Get pounded a few times and, sooner or later you'll get a ride that boost your confidence and stoke. All I'm saying is don't limit yourself, you're probably a better surfer then you think.
100049 2802 Bing Pintail Lightweight 7 Basenji703 Jul 25, 2016 2016-07-25T14:55:45-0400 Unfortunately, Austin has left the surfboard industry.

100050 2800 California - Second weekend in October 4 Surfnfish Jul 25, 2016 2016-07-25T15:04:04-0400 If you go to SF OB in October, you may never drive another mile until it's time to haul ass, it's the start of Prime Time there. Highly recommend the Ocean Park motel, a very cool retro courtyard style motel on 46th ave, south end of OB, 10 min walk and you're paddling out. And just a couple minute walk to a great morning cafe, with a very good nearby neighborhood store as well. Water temps should be 56 - 58, air probably 75 to 80. 4/3 suit with booties the call.
100051 2801 shark attacked a seal in the line up yesterday.. 3 Stef Jul 25, 2016 2016-07-25T15:18:02-0400 it was around 11:15 am. I actually went in,I was the only one, I just sat inside. the seal body ended up drifting north , I saw it after i got out. I got out when the police came down to the corner . I was worried that they were going to make me get out. normally the police issue a bulletin after shark sighting but nothing. yeah , lots of 6 to 10 ' sightings , but just sightings nothing serious..about 5 years ago, a 20' plus popped up with a seal in its mouth about 100 yds from shore in front of taco bell - same time of year.
100052 2801 shark attacked a seal in the line up yesterday.. 4 xyzzy Jul 25, 2016 2016-07-25T15:27:02-0400 Damn.. I did see a truck backed down onto the beach this morning loading something into the bed, on the south side around 520am when it was still dark. Seemed odd. I wonder if it was a carcass? Was just me and one other guy out at first daylight,.. saw some seals and humpbacks and bait. I was there the morning with the news casters were trying to do interviews -- when they said it was a six footer and asked what time surfers showed up I just went ahead and paddled out right behind them Certainly had it on my mind sitting out there by myself in 12+ feet of water. Was some good sets though. I'll be back out there tomorrow at dawn..trying to get this 5'9 retro fish going...

Unless the PTLW you are looking at was a custom, they are built lighter than most boards their size. I surfed one exclusively in the type of NJ waves you are describing. Mine was 9'6", stock. For reasons I would rather not get into here, I sold mine and had Austin build something similar and I absolutely love it. Hard edge the last third and super maneuverable especially on steeper waves chest hight or bigger. too bad he isn't shaping anymore. He could have built you something special. Good luck in the search.

Since most waves I ride are like knee-waist high, however, I still think I need a longer board. I can always use my 8'2 Austin stubby on the bigger days.

Click to expand... Yes, this is a custom PTLW I saw at a shop. Don't know exactly how heavy but felt pretty heavy. Full volan glass job with a deck patch.
100064 2802 Bing Pintail Lightweight 12 Eelgrass Jul 25, 2016 2016-07-25T18:10:13-0400 I would also say the PTLW is a good option, but i'm not sure about the full volan glass job. The standard glass (6 + 6 deck patch?) is sufficient, and keeping the board on the lighter side allows you (me) to get into the turn much quicker, especially on beach break. I have a 9'6 and am of similar physical dimensions as you. I only reach for the PTLW for reef breaks when i'm pretty certain its going to have some juice, but i actually think it is a great option for beach break when it is smaller (~3 ft) and kind of steep/pitchy, as it often is at the beach. If you are looking to stay with a longboard for beach break, i don't think you can go wrong with a PTLW. Give it a shot, if it doesn't work for you, you can easily re-sell it (see #2 from "Not alone" thread!).

100078 2802 Bing Pintail Lightweight 15 Chilly Willy Jul 26, 2016 2016-07-26T05:03:48-0400 Makawao: Just an observation -- pretty cool attention to detail with the matching leash string on that Austin. Newlyn: The 3-stringer model seems to be maybe a little bit more obscure in terms of ridership. There was a Windex blue one at the Beach House board swap a few years ago and it was one sexy wave machine. I haven't ridden that particular Bing model, but I have spent a lot of time on a 10' G&S Retro Redfin (similar concept, both speed shapes). I think it works well in steeper surf and rides with confidence in bigger waves (head+), although it doesn't have the hard rail in the tail that would probably help with steeper waves. The big strength of these boards seems to be tremendous trim power in the sense that stepping up to the front 1/3 of the board kicks it into 5th gear.

I am heavier than you and I had no issues with pressure dents on the deck. My Austin started from his Signature model plan shape and went from there. The Signature model was a 4 or 5 fin setup, I believe, but mine is a single. Based on what I have seen, I am sure that Matt could build you what you want. Chilly Willy: Nice catch. It matches the pin line. Austin had that color in the shop when I picked it up, so I said, "why not."
100089 2802 Bing Pintail Lightweight 17 081 Jul 26, 2016 2016-07-26T06:39:56-0400 I've got a 9-10 pintail lightweight and 9-6 Magic popout I bought for travel. Both are good boards but I prefer the Bing. It does not have a lot of nose rocker but I figured it out really quick. It paddles fast and is easy to get into waves early. Catches everything. It's plenty maneuverable with a sweep type fin and has held up well with the stock glass job. In my opinion weight is not your friend in a steeper break. I had a triple stringer Infinity custom that I sold because of the weight. I haven't found a condition the Bing didn't work in. Surfed it when I got it in California on reef breaks and it did well and surf it here in Texas at pier and jetty beach breaks and it does fine. Have had it out in good size hurricane surf with no problem. All that said, I've not ridden it in anything really top to bottom so cannot comment on that.

You and he surf similar waves and he probably has a good grasp on what'll work. CA boards are different than what we should all ride. Not saying all are different but their rocker in longboards is flatter for the most part. I've surfed a ptlw and they work well for waves you describe but there are a lot of other options. Especially if noseriding is not your thing.

I noticed longboarding, in particular traditional style (leash less, single fin, heavily glassed boards) never really took hold here. Then I thought of my travels along the eastern seaboard and noticed the same idea (exceptions noted). Yes, you will SEE longboards in the line up, but they are typically 2+1's squirrel finned tethered to a 50 year old man. One would assume that given the small nature of our waves, people would go bananas for it. Even here on the gulf coast where the waves barely crack chest high, the crowd will mainly consist of shortboards. Trend following, lack of knowledge? Just feeling like discussing.
100099 2801 shark attacked a seal in the line up yesterday.. 8 Surfnfish Jul 26, 2016 2016-07-26T09:06:49-0400 For a couple of decades, while out trolling salmon in his skiff, Dick Keating would often see 'The Old Man' cruising the north tip of Linda Mar, occasionally spotted close to the Wander Inn rock. When we were fishing a hot salmon bite in the early 90's and the fleet was spread out, we had reports coming in of 5 different GW sightings ranging from Martins beach to Sharp Park within the same morning, with different descriptions in size and coloring. In 95', a dead whale floated along the outer breakwater wall in Princeton - harbormaster was following the carcass, taking video of 3 different whites taking chunks out of it, just a hundred yards outside the lineup. Harbormaster was yelling over the bullhorn to clear the water, kids out surfing were flipping him off and kept surfing. And if you know Curt from Powerlines, Mavericks films, ask him about the time he watched me and Chris Libbey get circled by a beast that forced us up onto the rock while we were out surfing Flat Rock alone, while Curt and my son were up on the cliffs changing to join us. The quarter mile paddle in from the rock, going for it after not having seen the beast for half an hour, was the longest paddle of our lives. Curt went back the next afternoon at the same time, took video of a max GW slamming a large seal lion and taking it apart in the lineup. Called my house asked if I wanted to see the footage. "Not as long as I live"..

My theory (could be wrong) is the lack of shapers outside of Mayo and RC to help put nice logs, hulls, fishes etc into the line up. Not too many shops that I can think of that carry a decent selection of logs either. I know most of the guys I surf with down here finally picked up logs and they constantly tell me they surf 3 times as much as they did before. Go figure.

Spent several years surfing the TX Gulf Coast. Lots of longboards, but definitely less of the traditional style. My primary theory: fewer surfers, less shaper-centered culture compared to CA, and therefore greater predominance of mass-market type boards (Stewarts, Surftechs, etc.) My secondary theory: although the waves are usually small, they are choppy, unpredictable and often outright crappy. Many transitional log designs are not necessarily ideal in crap conditions. I personally found it easier to ride a lighter, more "modern" longboard there and found my dedicated noserider poorly suited to conditions most of the time. Also noticed most of the best local loggers rode boards with more rocker and contemporary design features than one would expect for a hotshot. Dunno if this theory holds for places on the East Coast that have *better* waves tho. Quintal sure can rock a traditional log in FL waves.
