By way of recap, I started surfing three years ago, I am 41, 5'10 and about 190 lbs. I surf exclusively NJ beach break. I have been doing well with my 8'2 Austin stubby, and I am looking for something a bit longer to get into waves earlier. At the same time, I want something that will be somewhat forgiving on steep drops, so a bit of extra nose rocker perhaps. I don't have any real aspirations to become a noserider (although I do try to shuffle up there every once in a while), so I think a somewhat narrower nose would be better for me. I am hard on decks, so I am looking for something durable. I was close to buying an epoxy popout magic model, but just couldn't bring myself to do it. So, now I am looking at an extra-volan glassed Bing Pintail Lightweight. The board is definitely heavy, so the "lightweight" is a misnomer. Dimensions are 9'8" x 23 1/8 x 3 3/16. Advice and reviews appreciated. Also, curious how the Bing 3 stringer compares. Much appreciated. Click to expand... Unless the PTLW you are looking at was a custom, they are built lighter than most boards their size. I surfed one exclusively in the type of NJ waves you are describing. Mine was 9'6", stock. For reasons I would rather not get into here, I sold mine and had Austin build something similar and I absolutely love it. Hard edge the last third and super maneuverable especially on steeper waves chest hight or bigger. too bad he isn't shaping anymore. He could have built you something special. Good luck in the search. |
