334932 20597 Let's Talk About Eggs 1 Seenovision Jan 13, 2025 2025-01-13T11:55:11-0500 Who rides eggs and loves them? What shapers make your favorite eggs? What's a speed egg vs. 'regular' egg? Let's dig into it. I had an 8'0" Fineline egg I loved and won't shut up about on here. Have since moved onto Andreinis, notably a Vaquero which I guess is more of a Hull, but still egg-adjacent, right? I've been really eyeing boards in the 7'2" size. Some shapers/brands of eggs I'm curious about: Mitsven Gary Hanel Gordon & Smith (My buddy has a 7'6" he loves) THC Who else makes them and what should I expect/look for? Cheers
334934 20597 Let's Talk About Eggs 2 bobsacamano Jan 13, 2025 2025-01-13T12:07:03-0500 The best eggs I've had were Campbell Brothers and a Fineline. Though, if Manny's stubbie shapes count, then that's my favorite.
334936 20597 Let's Talk About Eggs 3 seelegs Jan 13, 2025 2025-01-13T12:25:37-0500 I’ve been interested in hanels eggs lately, also been riding Vaquero’s recently and that’s my only real experience with that type of outline but I love em. Seems like the perfect base outline to explore different bottoms and fin options to find the flavor you’re looking for.

From what I've read, Hanel eggs are more performance-oriented which for some reason hearing that turns me off? But could be an unwarranted reaction on my part and they look sweet to me.

I thought about putting Mandala on there as I'm interested, but couldn't quite find any shapes/setups from him that felt squarely like an 'egg' to me. This makes me want to take another look at his stubbies. Are those twinzers?
334940 20597 Let's Talk About Eggs 6 treebeard Jan 13, 2025 2025-01-13T13:18:29-0500 I’ve got a 7’6 EC Freeride egg that’s been a magic mid for me
334949 20597 Let's Talk About Eggs 7 jettyjawn Jan 13, 2025 2025-01-13T14:02:38-0500 I also won’t shut up about my old 7’10 fineline egg. It was so much fun in anything I surfed it in from fast pitchy beach break to big point surf to shin high baby waves. I almost exclusively rode this board for two years when I lived in LA. I recently acquired a 7’2 on the east coast and find it wants a little more juice. I briefly had a 6’6 as well out here and that was fun in good waves. 7’2 splits the difference for me where I can take it out in smaller waves as long as there’s some push and feel confident taking it out in head high+ waves as well. I had a 6’8 mitsven egg here in NY for a bit as well and it was really fun on stomach-head high clean days. I don’t think you can go wrong with an egg from any of the SD shapers but there’s definitely something special about the hilbers ones.

Not grovelers. Oracle is Manny's more traditional egg model. He does them in most fin setups, same with his stubbies.
334953 20597 Let's Talk About Eggs 9 SdSurferguy Jan 13, 2025 2025-01-13T14:31:52-0500 My first board was a 7'2 tri speed egg, been addicted ever since. I've had a number over the years in various lengths/fin setups from 6'6 to 8'. I think the Stu Kenson twinzer eggs are currently my favorite, now riding a 6'8 but had a 7'2 for a few years that was fun too (and could make a waist high day really fun). Runner up is a 7' Mitsven quad egg (chest high+). And have surfed at least a half dozen Tony Staples speed eggs too, also a great choice (all have been tri fins).

334963 20597 Let's Talk About Eggs 14 mightyrime Jan 13, 2025 2025-01-13T16:07:47-0500 i have had so many eggs..let me see if i can list them all...with notes 6'10" Sanchez tokyo drifter ( honestly i only owned this for a few months and traded to my sisters friend for a longboard i wanted to no real review... but seemed fine) 6'8" SK twinzer ( still own and i am on the fence about, mine is 21.75"x 2.75" with a wide tail seems like it has too much foam for my weight but i am still working through it. My friend has a 6'10" that is 21" wide and i love it... most drive i have ever felt through a bottom turn.) 7'10" EC free ride ( rad board but i did not care for all the vee in the back end of the board, seemed to paddle slow for its size.. sold it) 7'4 Christenson V2 ( paddled slow and seemed suited for perfect point breaks... sold it) 7' Mitsven magic ( great egg nothing bad to say about it except it has that skip frye sort of rail so in my experience it has super glide but can slide out in a critical turn... sold it) 7'6" mitsven magic ( see above... but at 7'6 it was great as a single fin in slopey surf, they do have a bit of a stiff feeling... honestly i sold it because i want a bigger one... i feel this board would be amazing in the 7'10"-8'4" range) 8' sanchez pintail egg ( awesome all around egg i rode it so much for like 3 seasons... sold it, but regret it) 7'6" Haley pin trimcraft ( i loved this board it was magic... but sadly got stolen and was never recovered) 7'4" Lovemachine thick lizzy ( i got this to replace the stolen 7'6 haley pin, it did not have the same magic as the HP... sold it) 7'2 Lovemachine FM ( is this an egg?? i love it and its my go to mid egg)
334964 20597 Let's Talk About Eggs 15 feldo Jan 13, 2025 2025-01-13T16:09:17-0500 Fineline makes a great egg. I had a 7'10 a long time ago and it was magic. Favorite egg is my 6'8 Burch. Extremely fast, paddles great, beaked nose, nearly dead flat bottom, soft rails and pretty narrow. He included this extremely raked island fin that I was nervous about at first, but have learned to love it. An egg at this size (for me) sits alongside the short-boards in my quiver.

Do you ride them in different conditions? How do they go in bigger and smaller surf in comparison? Click to expand... both my current eggs are twinzers 6'8" SK and 7'2" FM. I would say i ride them in the same conditions i rode my single or 2+1 eggs. I do feel the FM for its size paddles faster and catches waves better. It also seems faster on the wave face. I personally think the twinzers / twins are better for the more medium sized surf that i usually surf. I maybe had the twinzer in surf to 6' and it felt hard to keep in the pocket as it just went so fast out of a bottom turn. Its really exciting in waves with juice, but feel you need to be on your "A" game.... unless you just want to go straight and trim out to the shoulder. If i was consistently riding head high + i think a 2+1 offers more control and predictability. vice versa the 2+1 is a bit sluggish in smaller slopey stuff. The single fin maybe is a step behind the twinzer... i think single fin might actually be slower down the line than the twin.... hard to say.... but the single ( on a 2+1 board) is more loose and free on the slopey stuff.

Do you ride them in different conditions? How do they go in bigger and smaller surf in comparison? Click to expand... I like the twinzers because of the drive and skatey feel. The 7'2 SK (blue one) I was riding from 2-7' surf but it was always a bit big for me, the 6'8 (green one in the photo) I ride in chest high plus and I think it's magical. Had some memorable waves last year on an overhead day with nasty late lowtide backside drops. The twinzers seems to inspire confidence backside I can't find on a single or tri fin, (probably more due to my lack of skill). I'm usually surfing close out beach break these days, so smaller is better for getting out.
334969 20597 Let's Talk About Eggs 19 Terrapinstation Jan 13, 2025 2025-01-13T16:30:26-0500 My 7'6 JH egg with a 2+1 set up handles a wide range of conditions, but is primarily my high tide winter beach break board. It is a lot more enjoyable to ride when conditions are chest high. I would like to get a center fin box adapter and try it as a thruster in smaller surf to see how that goes. It really doesn't do well as a groveler.

Been 7'2" curious for a bit now as well.

Both are hully enough that they allow me to harvest my favorites parts of a hull from them, yet have none of the demands/limitations of a true hull. Dont get me wrong there is room for these two boards AND a hull of course in the quiver. HP below a couple years ago

Simple classic vee to flat to vee out with a chunk under chest. It goes mach speed and carves the sharpest turn out of any eggs I rode. Flat bottom is my new surf journey hehe

335028 20597 Let's Talk About Eggs 29 Driftwood Jan 14, 2025 2025-01-14T10:32:04-0500 Eggs are fun. So many good shapers and shapes in the San Diego area. Rode a 7'6" Takayama for a while, had a nice 7'4" Rusty way back, a fun 6'6" G&S... shaped a bunch in the 7'6" range. Mostly 2+1's but a few singles in the lot. Current egg is an 8' full-bodied model for my 53 year-old self. This one is a dedicated quad, which is a bit of a departure for me, plenty of volume by still pretty nimble. Definitely fun when I'm in the mood for it!

I've only had singles and 2+1s in the past and I've been a little under the weather and need to get a few sessions in here. I did surf it in San Diego for a week and preferred a single or 2+1 out there but it was made for NC where I think the thruster setup will make more sense. It has a slight roll in the entry, to the slightest of double concaves transitioning into a pretty pronounced via just in front of the fins and all the way thru the exit.

335380 20597 Let's Talk About Eggs 60 hullogfish Jan 17, 2025 2025-01-17T14:17:28-0500 Eggs are super user friendly and with wide noses, paddle well. IMO, there is a sweet spot for wide noses where they paddle well, but aren't cumbersome is steep surf. The traditional San Diego nose width seems like a sweet spot( think: G&S, Mitsven) and to me where the speed egg begins. I have quite few eggy outline boards and with fin and bottom configurations ranging wildly, each board is quite different. On one end is the Mandala Cladestino, that thrives in paddling with its very full nose but doesn't lend itself to steep drops, it is a convex nosed board with a distinct feeling. Then, I have a bonzer 5 egg, fullish nose, concaves galore out the back, more of a "good wave" egg. Then, the Mccallum PDX which is eggy in appearance, but the nose is more fishy than eggy and can quite frankly be looked at like a shortboard for the non- shortboarder. My egg list: 8'1 Mandala Clandestino 7'10 Lovelace Thick Lizzy 6/6 Mccallum PDX 7'2 Bonzer 5 egg 7'6 Mccallum twin fin Kimbo egg. Think a big wave egg witha fullish nose and pulled in pin tail 6'8 Mandala hull/edgeboard stubbie/egg with a very full nose. Seenovision said: Who rides eggs and loves them? 335563 20597 Let's Talk About Eggs 77 CloseOut Jan 19, 2025 2025-01-19T11:04:40-0500 I’ve been on an egg exploration and trying a few different types/lengths. 7”2 Bing collector - this has been great all around board and paddles super well with wider nose. Felt it could hold in steeper stuff with pintail but rails are somewhat fat so not the easiest to turn 7”4 Bing good Karma - much more of a bigger wave board needs some push to get it going, don’t ride this one as much as 7”6 Elmore egg man - a friends that’s I’ve borrowed a few times. Much more paddle friendly the the karma, pretty turnable aswell, slightly more glide then the collector but likely just couple more inches 7”6 beamish single fin egg/ mini glider - more of a step up point and shoot, likely going to move this one as it’s too thick to duck dive. 6”10 Fineline egg - this one was pretty foiled and needed slightly more wave to get it going for breaks I was surfing and ended up reaching for different boards at size I felt it would have been good for. Really nice trim and fast once it got going though and could crank a turn. Would want to try something in the 7”6+ length again if it ever pops up 6”6 Campbell bros Bonzer egg- picked this up recently as a bigger waver egg, have only gotten out once on a small - medium size day to test lower end and it was still able to work. Need more sessions before reporting back.
335567 20597 Let's Talk About Eggs 78 NCJohn Jan 19, 2025 2025-01-19T11:54:49-0500 I agree on the fineline egg the foil is so good but it likes a little juice. Mine is 7'2. I had the same experience with a takayama howard special mini I had that was also 7'2. Id recommend both boards for chest + waves. The 7'0 Frye i have that was an anniversary gift has a down railed id say almost 80/20 and at 22" x 3" has a little more range on the low end but still shines on stomach + days. Due to the new baggage restrictions on American Airlines, I'm currently looking for a 1 board quiver to keep in San Diego for the knee to chest high, mushy and/or high tide days. I'm able to travel with a bag up to 7' so I can bring boards for the better days. For anyone that has a longer egg (8' - 9') and an eagle or mini Glider and maybe a long simmons or fish simmons at the same length, which would you recommend? Thanks

Mine was 7'2 with side bites, it was pretty foiled and 2 7/8 so it might have just been too thin for me.

For anyone that has a longer egg (8' - 9') and an eagle or mini Glider and maybe a long simmons or fish simmons at the same length, which would you recommend? Thanks Click to expand... I have/had quite a few 8'0sh San Diego style eggs. Surfed them a lot in south and ncsd, as well as various magics and eagles at different lengths. You could do it on an 8 foot egg but for the conditions you are asking I would say between 8'8 - 9' is better. In my experience you could one board quiver that wave range you specified with any of those types of boards in that high 8 low 9 range, and depending how and where you want to surf would be the deciding factor. Eagles are more tuned for blasting through sections in trim, sd eggs versatile and neutral platform that does what you ask in a wide range of waves, Magics tuned better for the higher range of those conditions with a bit more rocker pulled in tail etc. If you plan to ride boards you bring for better days I would be thinking eagle or egg, if you wanted to do the whole trim out glidery style go eagle. If you wanted a more turnable versatile board go for classic sd egg (they still trim out beautifully and can be ridden in so many different styles). Magic is also a great choice, but small and mushy maybe not the best option. Small and with some zip or curve to it, it's happy days.

At the time, I just had overlap in that area and wanted a bit more of a forward trimmy type of hull. I ended up passing it to a bud who loves it. I had some amazing waves on it.
