And use of 'faux' stringers was easily recognizable - pretty much just exposed veneer strips with no depth. Popouts were soon replaced with production boards like Dextra and the Duke K in the referenced CL ad, then thankfully went the way of the dinosaur once enough shapers emerged to meet market demands. One story, however, was about some 'scumbag' (his words) socal shaper who during the 90's was shaping Da Cat models and selling them as authentic, hustling he was Greg's official outlet for them. A local detective, who was also a core surfer, got wind of it and contacted Greg. By the time Greg got the scam shut down with the detectives assistance, over 30 fakes had been sold. It was in darn good shape for a nearly 70 year old board, but he had me strip the varnish and retune the blank. Before revarnishing he got a wood burning kit and added the Swastika to the top of the tail. Later I would learn he put it in a vintage board auction as pristine, original condition Pacific Homes. It brought 20,000$, when a sworn enemy of his learned of this he contacted the new owner and described the journey the board had gone through. Soon enough a certified letter from an attorney arrived with lawsuit demands. The result was refund of money and a balsa Curren gun and one of the phony GN/Dora's thrown to stop the fraud case |

He requested I route through in places when chambering as the boards had these flaws and put in patches. The following year he took them to the Fl. trade show and represented them as the "lost boards" with a story of how they were in process and the factory was relocated, the boards were in plastic and were forgotten about until a new remodel uncovered them. Another sworn enemy knew of the ruse and was at the show, he planted himself near by, grabbed anyone who showed interest and told them he saw them built, they were fakes. I'm a big fan of the purge, we've exceeded the population that the planet can comfortably cater to, 12 billion and by 2030, 25 billion. This guy even shows Sam's excellent Surfboard Guide in his ad but doesn't quite know how to read it. Or he doesn't know that FU and Bahne fin boxes didn't exist until well after the 60s, when he apparently thinks this board was made. While a cool board--allegedly a '57 V/J with the original fin--and apparently an early foam board, it's been gel-koted, probably a while ago and looks like it's got a lot of scratches in said gel-kote. On top of that, the stringer was painted black and is not visible. If this was original, unpainted and in above average shape, it'd probably be worth in the ballpark of it's asking of $3500.
