Click to expand... for true popouts, always comes comes down to the rails, which will have a prominent ridge at the rail apex where the top and bottom shells that had been 'popped out' of the molds were fitted together. And use of 'faux' stringers was easily recognizable - pretty much just exposed veneer strips with no depth. Popouts were soon replaced with production boards like Dextra and the Duke K in the referenced CL ad, then thankfully went the way of the dinosaur once enough shapers emerged to meet market demands. Long live the custom surfboard..

Few years back, while road tripping down the coast with my wife, we ran into Greg Noll and his wife in a Crescent City beach diner, and it turned into a 2 hour story down lunch, while he told some hella great stories, including some hilarious ones about Dora. One story, however, was about some 'scumbag' (his words) socal shaper who during the 90's was shaping Da Cat models and selling them as authentic, hustling he was Greg's official outlet for them. A local detective, who was also a core surfer, got wind of it and contacted Greg. By the time Greg got the scam shut down with the detectives assistance, over 30 fakes had been sold. 112855 1121 Dudes smoking crack selling surfboards 116 shapewright Mar 20, 2017 2017-03-20T12:50:49-0400 A board builder I had worked for had a vintage balsa very much the same As the Pacific Homes Swastika model. It was in darn good shape for a nearly 70 year old board, but he had me strip the varnish and retune the blank. Before revarnishing he got a wood burning kit and added the Swastika to the top of the tail. Later I would learn he put it in a vintage board auction as pristine, original condition Pacific Homes. It brought 20,000$, when a sworn enemy of his learned of this he contacted the new owner and described the journey the board had gone through. Soon enough a certified letter from an attorney arrived with lawsuit demands. The result was refund of money and a balsa Curren gun and one of the phony GN/Dora's thrown to stop the fraud case

112860 1121 Dudes smoking crack selling surfboards 119 shapewright Mar 20, 2017 2017-03-20T15:46:02-0400 The same man had me build balsa reproductions of 3 of his late 60's north shore guns very much like what Ryan Dotson and the hip spacemen were riding, 16-1/2" or so. He requested I route through in places when chambering as the boards had these flaws and put in patches. The following year he took them to the Fl. trade show and represented them as the "lost boards" with a story of how they were in process and the factory was relocated, the boards were in plastic and were forgotten about until a new remodel uncovered them. Another sworn enemy knew of the ruse and was at the show, he planted himself near by, grabbed anyone who showed interest and told them he saw them built, they were fakes. It caused such an uproar that the boards were stashed behind the curtains of the booth until the show was over

112864 1121 Dudes smoking crack selling surfboards 121 shapewright Mar 20, 2017 2017-03-20T18:53:56-0400 We've reached a level in human evolution where self entitlement is the goal, " I want, I deservere it, you owe it to me". And it spills over into every aspect of our lives, no one is taking responsibility for their welfare, safety, it's up to the other guy to look out for them. I'm a big fan of the purge, we've exceeded the population that the planet can comfortably cater to, 12 billion and by 2030, 25 billion. We have already felt the effects, water, energy, food, I'll be long gone, I only hope my children stock up on plenty ammo

Shaper said he was getting worried about his partner, suspected him of having a growing drug habit to which he vigorously denied. Shaper went to Japan for on an annual shaping trip, returned to find the business account cleared out, accounts payable and shop rents unpaid for several months, the 150K of inventory in the shop sold off, partner now MIA. Sued by suppliers, landlord, glassing business, lost his home and just walked away from shaping, bitter and depressed. some drug addicts need a good rehab, others a damn good flogging in the public square..

114921 1121 Dudes smoking crack selling surfboards 134 FirstPointEric May 9, 2017 2017-05-09T09:13:33-0400 This doofus is asking $2,100 for what looks like a late-80s-to-mid-90s "vintage" Weber Performer that's not in great shape. Thin, single stick--maybe 3/16"?--with several repairs and even some bonus yellowing. Can't decide if this guy is smoking crack or meth. 8^U https://losangeles.craigslist.org/wst/spo/6096678582.html

This guy even shows Sam's excellent Surfboard Guide in his ad but doesn't quite know how to read it. Or he doesn't know that FU and Bahne fin boxes didn't exist until well after the 60s, when he apparently thinks this board was made. After careful consideration, this guy is definitely smoking meth. %^\
115006 1121 Dudes smoking crack selling surfboards 137 FirstPointEric May 11, 2017 2017-05-10T20:47:37-0400 Here's another. While a cool board--allegedly a '57 V/J with the original fin--and apparently an early foam board, it's been gel-koted, probably a while ago and looks like it's got a lot of scratches in said gel-kote. On top of that, the stringer was painted black and is not visible. If this was original, unpainted and in above average shape, it'd probably be worth in the ballpark of it's asking of $3500. This one? Nope, sorry. https://losangeles.craigslist.org/wst/spo/6124670689.html
