| 240222 | 12565 | 1 Board, 3 Board, & 5 Board Quiver | 1 | shredsickgnar | Mar 8, 2022 | 2022-03-08T00:35:33-0500 | I've been thinking about this for a while and I find it really interesting how my choices change based on how many boards are available to me. I know a lot of you guys have some solid and diverse quivers so I thought it would be an interesting thought experiment to see what everyone would choose. Please provide a little bit of insight on your choices if you have time to. 1 Board Quiver: 5'8'' Gary Hanel Pill Its a quad groveller with bonzer concave. Nice tuned rails. It is the most versatile and alive board I've ever surfed. Fun in knee high slop and can handle double over head just fine when you put a bigger set of fins in it. As close of a mix of a HPSB groveller and a fish as you can get. Can handle a surprisingly big and powerfully wave for what it is. 3 Board Quiver: 9'4'' Jim Phillips SWT. This may change in the future because I'm searching for something new, but until I find that this board is a great and fast nose rider that can handle the most gutless surf to shoulder high and lined up. A great log for what its meant for. 5'10'' Michael Miller Fish. Fantastic average to good wave keel fish and can be surfed as hard as I am capable of surfing it. Has a smoothness and glide that I haven't felt in another board. Refer to my review of it the the board review section if you want to know more. But the less you wiggle around on this board and the more you read the wave and place it in the right spot the better. Let the board do the work for you. It's incredibly rewarding to surf like that. 5'10'' Gary Hanel Diet/Super Pill. Its the same basic design as the 5'8'' pill but stretched out and thinned out. It has ability in low quality surf but surfs very well in the average to big surf. This board would cover the ground of step up/shortboard, while still retaining a lot of speed and glide that aren't usually associated with those shapes. 5 Board Quiver: 9'4'' Jim Phillips SWT - see above. 9'6'' Velzy Pig. The pig offers something different its not a nose rider bu… |

And interesting to see how boards in quiver relate to what else is in quiver. 1: 7’4 Haley Pin - it can surf 1’ or 8’ as long as it’s not really hollow. Fun, easy, predictable. If I can’t check surf, I bring this. 3: 7’4 Haley Pin 6’6 Mitsven twinzer fish - hollow wave board to take off under lip and duck dive a bunch. 8’4 McVee - great small wave board for non noseriding. Also great in Santa Cruz point breaks. 5: 3 above 9’9 log for noseriding. Working on one w Stu K 5’11 Superchunk. Just getting one now from Manny. Will report back. Though here is to have a fun small wave board for breaks look the Hook + beach breaks < shoulder high |

I’m doing a quiver tweak at the moment so will enjoy reading all the responses. As a minimalist 2-3 would probably be my ideal number but I always seem to have 4-5 boards. I currently have 4 after selling a fish recently, will likely sell 1-2 more with the view to buying 1-2 more. Which will realistically put me back at 4-5. My longest is 9’0” and my shortest is 5’10”. I don’t like holding onto boards (or gear) that I’m not using / vibing with, too many choices, too many wasted sessions on the wrong board. At the moment… if I could only have one board it would be my 19 year old 9’0” custom PU longboard… I love that thing. |

Click to expand... This is my experience with my 9'6" takayama Model T. I only have a one board quiver, and it works great for me considering 90% of our days are longboard conditions. On bigger days it does fine too. Aside from the top 20% of the surfers out, I catch as many or more waves as the short/midnnboarders on overhead days. |

Its funny because this would only be on the One board quiver and not on any quiver that has an additional board. It does everything OK but nothing great. But if i really needed a board that worked in 1' to 8' this would be it. Mostly its 2' to 3' around here so i longboard most of the time, so i need float and glide. But this would work on the occasional big swell. Its the board i constantly throw in the car when the conditions are in flux from small to maybe big or vice versa, or i am unsure o what the conditions are. 3 board Yater Spoon 9'6" . Just such a great all around longboard that works in so many conditions. Mix of classic feel and modern performance. This would be my second choice probably for 1 board quiver. Yater HP speed shape 8'6". This is new to my quiver and i love it. This works in small and clean up to what ever size i was willing to surf. Fast and fun and versatile. Does not like bumpy / choppy windy conditions though, due to very flat rocker and triple stringer that makes it stiff.... but so nice when its clean EC Freeride egg 7'8" . Once it gets a bit better in size i love a mid length egg. This is on the larger egg end but many of the waves i surf around here are more slopey than pitchy. 5 board Yater Spoon 9'6" Yater HP Speed shape 8'6" EC Freeride 7'8" Byzak 9'8" Noserider . Would for sure add a dedicated Noserider in a 5 board quiver around here. I am not totally in love with this Byzak, but its the Noserider that I own. Roy Sanchez Tokyo drifter 7'. Another egg slightly smaller for when its a bit bigger and steeper. This is a 2 + 1. I wanted to add a Keel fish in the 6' range in here as i have 2 but honestly i dont use them very much and when i do i dont surf them very well... i hope to figure them out and ride them more. This is a total nerd out thread |

Blended nose concave to rolled with some tail flip. Great board! Honorable mention Christenson Bandito, fits the same criteria. I surf these 2 the most. 3 Boards 9'6" PMP 7'10" C-Bucket pretty good chuck in truck and go, works in a wide range from small to holy shit. Honorable mention Arenal Microglide. Microglide trims better with wider tail, C-Bucket is way more fun to turn 11' Chris Craft if I lived elsewhere this might not have even been a consideration. Keeps me in good paddle shape plus is super fun on small clean days. I had an Eagle shaped by Chris, I like this better. 5 Boards 9'6" PMP 9'8" Almond Lumberjack noserider, like a floating side walk, fun to mix it up. Works well in beach breaks and all the good spots. 7'10" C-Bucket 11' Chris Craft 7'2" Takayama Howard mini. Works great on the better days, but also isn't bad In the small stuff despite what a lot of surfers claim. Pretty easy to surf, I was shocked at how well it turns off the top. Borrowed one on the West Coast and realized I was blowing it trying to surf a 5'7" fish in all conditions. My goal is to combine this and the C-Bucket which I am working out with Zamora. Honorable mention 7'4" Jive Opening doors fits the same criteria but different feels. Both surf on rail really well! I can't imagine not having swim fins and a hand plane or a few skateboards, but this is about surfboards!!!! |

Utility longboard - 8'8" Jim Phillips, Wombat: Hard to imagine ever getting bored of riding it, and it works in a very wide variety of wave sizes and conditions. 3. Add: Fish and Egg or Stubby - Above plus... - 5'10" Mandala, ASQ Fish: Favorite board I've ever owned. Replaces a shortboard most days. Will post a review eventually. - 7'0" Almond, Plez Phez: Extra rail for the in-between days and when conditions are less friendly for the other two boards. This could also be an egg up to 7'6" or a stubby (Mandala, Oracle!) in the 7'0"-7'6" range. 5. Add: Step-up and Log - Above plus... - 6'4" Maurice Cole, ProEev: Have one on order so it better do the trick! Basic slot for a reliable board on the days when you're pushing it. - 9'8" Tyler Warren, Noserider: Current log, but could think of others for this spot too. Also have a 9'6" Josh Martin that outdoes the TW on versatility. |

Yep, I've surfed it at 6'8" and 7'. Both worked. I'm a big board guy so I love the 9' length bc I think it just covers so many bases for San Diego surf. But it works at all sorts of lengths. I put some speed dialer quads in it recently and a great combo of hold and loose. 3 Boards 9'7'' Wayne Rich Wildcard 1 - Its small wave longboard that works for me. 5'10'' Michael Miller Keel Fish - Best fish I've ever surfed. But not great for small waves. 5'10'' GH Diet Pill - super versatile and can be pushed hard. It's my "HPSB" these days. 5 Boards 9'7'' Wayne Rich Wildcard 1 - Its small wave longboard that works for me. 5'10'' Michael Miller Keel Fish - Best fish I've ever surfed. But not great for small waves. 5'10'' GH Diet Pill - super versatile and can be pushed hard. It's my "HPSB" these days. 5'10'' Skip Frye Keel Fish - It has a glide and speed that the Miller Fish doesn't but is very unforgiving to surf. 7'6'' Campbell Bros 5 Bonzer Egg. I finally found a midlenth I like and that works for me. Need's a big sloppy wall. |

I rode whichever board was in the active cycle all over the place, East Coast beach break, 2-15 ft Puerto Rico, Hawaii, PNW, Costa Rica, all over. I also had a practical board limit was a lot of my surfing was done on personal vacation and work travel. Then around year 2000, my quiver began to expand and boards became more focused for conditions. However, if I needed to downsize... 1-Board Quiver 50" (4'2") Baseline Austin Paipo (poly/glass), 3-fin 3-Board Quiver (aka +2) 50" custom Bonzer Paipo by Malcolm Campbell (poly/glass), 5-fin 50" custom Ashton paipo (poly/glass), 3-fin 5-Board Quiver (aka +2 more) 48" Xylem Malama Kai paipo (wood), finless 50" sorta Bonzer, (poly/glass) 5-fin, modeled on the Campbell The range above are essentially all 50" boards for a whole host of reasons, but thickness profiles and planshapes vary in small ways that make big differences. The Malama Kai is used mostly in very small conditions and victory-at-sea conditions as it duck dives superbly. My Campbell bonzer board likes a good Pacific Ocean groundswell, the Sorta Bonzer is my Atlantic Ocean bonzer. The Ashton is my fullest profile sweetiepie but is basically the same outline as the Baseline Austin, so a favorite for Florida's weaker waves up to 6 ft. |

I made a mistake in my post - it's actually a 6'10", which feels good for me at 6'1" x 175lbs, although I'm sure a 6'8" would be good too. Whilst it has that planshape shift and sidebites and (apparently) a little more tail rocker, it's still pretty flat out the back end and does not feel like the 'hull' vibe is diluted in any way.... pretty stoked so far, if I'm honest. |

Any really foiled fish would do well. Whenever I don't really know how the waves will be I'll throw one of those in there, covers all the basics and I feel comfortable in a variety of waves. 3 board 1.Personally I'd snag my eternal life diamond twin (7') as a mid length cruise board than can still hang when the waves have juice. Any big twin would do. 2. Ryan Burch 5'3 squit fish. A true fish with maneuverability. Gotta have one in there. 3. My 5'8 parallelogram. Favorite board I own. Don't ride it every day but a perfect addition. 5 board 1. The squit has to stay 2. Alex Lopez terrapin somewhere in the 7'0 range 3. Ryan Burch picklefork 4. John Simon asym quad. Ordering one of these soon and could fill the shortboard/air void in the quiver 5. Maybe a shorter album Delma ? Really like the slot channel quads. Rode one and would love to have a 6'0 as a step up/volume board |
