Billy Mitchell airport is a small airstrip (no tower) on Hatteras Island, for small planes, but puts you right at ground zero. There are several ferries that operate to/from Hatteras and Okracoke island from North Carolina mainland. The consistent spot is by the lighthouse on the northside of the island, near the point. When it's firing it's primarily a big, beefy left with plenty of power. From there you can usually find breaks south or north, and in some areas can take vehicles on the beach. If it's onshore on the southside, it will be almost always offshore on the northside, and vice versa. All the breaks are beach breaks, sand bottom. The whole island is national park seashore, so aside from the existing villages, there is no development. There are four or five good campgrounds too, maybe the best at Frisco among the dunes and seaoats. After Labor Day, the place is fairly empty, except for fishermen, so accomodations are easily had at off-season prices. Some restaurants and shops close down in Jan/Feb, but many remain open all year. Many times we've been there floating in the lineup on the south side and as far as we could see, nobody on the beach or in the water, except us. The weather and water temps stay warm through mid to late October.
