She and her family were living in SoCal before the war, lost everything, were sent to a camp in Jerome, Arkansas. Settled in MD after the war. When I was about ten we went on a vacation to North Carolina (vacations were rare events). I remember my mom singing in the car, happy. Then we came upon a barn with the entire side painted in a confederate flag. My mom went completely silent. That's what comes to mind whenever I see that flag -- my mom's silence. |
