298998 17382 California--Current State of Living? 32 txgrinder Dec 3, 2023 2023-12-03T07:59:28-0500 KB949 said: As a CA native, growing up in San Clemente and now living in San Francisco I may be a little bias. It is not anywhere near as bad as the media makes it seem. Sure, prices are high, taxes stink, it can get crowded, and people steal shit. We are the largest populated state and the third largest state. The numerous major metro cities make us an easy media target. CA is not perfect by any means and can improve a lot like most people have stated. That is not my place to give advice. When you live somewhere you know when and where to go places to avoid the crowds and tourism. You learn to navigate and adapt your routines. Just like I'm sure everyone has in their hometowns. We are creatures of habit. Surfing continues to become more accessible and popular and does not seem to be slowing down even after covid. Although when you live somewhere, and put the time in to explore and get to know your area, you can find pockets both in and out of the water to get some alone time if that is what you want . The positives of living in CA out weigh the negatives in my book. There is so much surf access, mountain access, deserts, forests, state parks, national parks, BLM land, etc. Most of them world class destinations. You can go from the beach to the mountains in the same day if you want to (the California double dip). And quite literally participate in any activity you are into within an hour of your home (usually). You can live in small secluded towns, or busy large cities. Travel is easy from CA, from driving to flying you are pretty central to a lot of amazing destinations. There is something here for everyone and I think that is the lure of living in CA. Click to expand... 100% spot on. I had it pretty well dialed when I was there just a few years ago and never had an issue getting a non-crowded spot. That was another thread in here some months back that was good discussion. My main concern is freedom to do what I want to do and not be bothered with my hobbies and side hustle LOL....I have one friend I keep up with who still lives in Vista and he bitches/moans CONSTANTLY, "can't wait to leave", etc....but that is just him. He is a moaner. He thinks I have it so good in Texas, and I do, but we are over run now, so crowds are the norm again. Bad drivers, "now I am here so it's MY playground", rudeness, cutting in line...and all the stuff that comes with human behavior that is compressed. Lots to think about and I am not sure we would even move back, but it is a thought at times as it is getting tough anywhere to just live and pay your way. Might as well be back where there is great weather and good surf and all the other outdoor access we enjoy as a family. I'll say this...Texas is a great state with good people, but SERIOUSLY lacking in in BLM land. It is so privatized here and has been that way for a looooong time. Appreciate the thoughtful input.
