| 298928 | 17382 | California--Current State of Living? | 22 | Moustache Lou | Dec 2, 2023 | 2023-12-02T12:22:40-0500 | I grew up in SD, and though I’ve lived in a handful of other places, I still (and always will) consider it ‘home’. Within the past few months I went through the (relative) trauma of losing a job and having to look for a new one. I was seriously considering relocating to Huntsville, Alabama because there’s a lot of the kind of work I do there, and consoled myself with the thought that the price of living is about half of what it is here, and I could likely get more into hunting (which for someone fairly lazy about traveling is pretty difficult living in SD County). I’d basically have to give up surfing and the type of fishing I’ve done all my life though, so I consider myself extremely lucky to have found a new job right here, and with the same short commute I had with the last one. I live right in the heart of downtown, and there are certainly issues and inconveniences to deal with. My one bedroom condo doesn’t have the storage space for a large quiver of boards, but I manage to keep six logs and a few ‘short’ boards (plus a good amount of fishing gear) witout too much trouble. Getting boards to and from the car (especially longboards) is a bit of a hassle, but I’ve done my best to convince myself that that’s just part of the ‘ritual’. I have multiple breaks within a half hour drive from home and the north county reefs aren’t too much farther away. Trying to be respectful of the idea that this post was not intended to be in any way political, I’ll just say that in my opinion (then again, what the hell do I know?) many of the very real issues we’re experiencing in California are in fact political at their root, but a) I don’t see that changing any time soon (looking at recent history) and b) I refuse to let THAT chase me away. Wow… I just typed a lot more than my originally intended ‘San Diego is still a pretty rad place to live’……….. |
