| 254118 | 8877 | Rich Toby Pavel | 70 | trucker | Jul 15, 2022 | 2022-07-14T22:52:57-0400 | About 15 or so years ago I was shaping a few fish in my garage and I wanted some inspiration, so I walked into the Greenroom late in the afternoon. I was eyeing boards when Rich saw me and asked, “Are you shaping a board?” I said yep, and he said, “Come back with a notebook and your measuring tools.” I did, and he stayed in the shop for well over an hour after it closed that night going over every measurement on a speed dialer, showing me how to mark everything on the blank, in what order to do every step, etc., and having me take detailed notes. He then said, “when you get your board back from the glasser, bring it in and I’ll go over it with you.” So, a month later, I walked in with a fresh home shaped fish, and he spent another 45 min or so going over my board in detail with me, showing me what I got right and helping me see specific things I could better anticipate next time, how to improve my process, etc. For the next several years, we’d chat (one time he talked my parents’ ears off for a while when my dad was buying flip flops in the Green Room, again well after the shop should have been closed for the day). The Greenroom eventually closed for good, and he left San Diego. Several years ago, I ran into Rich at my corner coffee shop on my way into work. This is when he had the huge beard. I was thinking, “Man, that guy looks just like Rich Pavel!” He jumped up, bought me a cup of coffee & we hung out & talked boards for a while before I had to get into work. That repeated every single morning for a week, and then he disappeared from OB again. I’ve never bought a board from him because when he owned the Green Room I only rode boards that I shaped. My experience with Rich is that he was incredibly generous with his time & knowledge (and coffee). |
