Sometimes having a somewhat crappy memory is a good thing (makes already read books still enjoyable!). Just picked up The Stranger in the Woods to bring with me on vacation. Not much into fiction and I feel modern-day society generally sucks, so a true story about a hermit seems about right where I'm at these days... Anyone read the Duke Kahanamoku bio (Waterman)? Been thinking about picking that up for a while, but a lot of bios can be pretty dry.

Very interesting how the two brothers who ran a bicycle shop changed the way we travel. Also very cool that NASA sent a piece of the fabric from a Wright flyer to the moon on Apollo 11.

There are so many gems in this book, my favorite by Fante.

Last year at the SHACC, I spent days going through photos and kept coming back to Stoner's work - so many lesser-known gems that just capture something really special. Icon status is justified in my very humble opinion.

Brought back great memories of sailing from San Diego to Catalina every summer, diving out there, and just generally being on the fringes of a lot of cool stuff. It actually made me really nostaligic - for the area as it was, for what we got to do (thanks Mom and Dad!) and a bit bummed because I was so mono-focused on surfing that I missed some of the really neat boating/coastal stuff that my Dad was trying to turn us onto. We sailed a lot, but I just kindof glossed over navigation and such because I wanted to spend my free time surfing. Anyway, whether you've boated or dove or not, it's still a nice, easy, and informative read.

LW writes non fiction normally ("The Looming Tower" and many more) and this is only his second novel. Terrifying subject matter and then there's the fact we are actually living it in real time.

It's the saga of a stone mason building a church back in the crusade days. Really amazing story...
