35339 423 Mighty Water Dragon: 1 Roy Stewart Jan 22, 2012 2012-01-22T18:47:19-0500 We are approaching the Year of the Dragon, which is when we build Dragon Boards. This coming year of the Dragon is the first one since 1964 which is a Water Dragon year, so it is exceptionally auspicious for a Dragon surfboard. The previous Dragon Board was built during the year 2000. At 13'9' long and 23 to 24 inches wide the Dragon board has a length to width ratio of 7:1, and with a low rocker ( only 7 inches overall) it relies more on displacement based lift ( buoyancy ) than planing lift than most boards during the transition between paddling and surfing. Dimensions are length 13'9" Width 24" Thickness 2 & 5/8" Weight ( projected) 55 pounds Volume 90 litres approx Rails 50/50 elliptical ( continuous ) Rocker circular arc 7 inches overall The original board proved itself to be an exceptionally good and reliable performer over a wide range of conditions, from knee high to triple overhead reef waves. it took a bit of getting used to taking off on waves over head high on such a long and heavy board ( the original board was 65 to 70 pounds in weight) but the beast never let me down and survived some drops which I thought were impossible, so confidence was gained through experience. This board will be a tad wider, thicker and lighter than the original, but still has beefed up scantlings to keep it heavier than it would be with my regular schedule. Planking is 10mm instead of 7 to 8mm, blocking extends into the board further ( also required for the 'pinched' or elliptical rail section) and there is more solid blocking in the tail area. The extra weight means more effort is required to carry and paddle the board, but that is more than offset by the fact that it is there when it is needed i.e. at all times when riding the wave and particularly in strong offshore or bumpy conditions. Riding the Dragon was a unique experience and I'm looking forward with slight trepidation to doing it again. Here's the third of four Dragon Board panel…

35474 423 Mighty Water Dragon: 3 Roy Stewart Jan 25, 2012 2012-01-24T19:13:22-0500 Hi Jook, The original board was sold back in 2003 to a surfing museum for three square meals. It's hard to pick a single favourite because it is usually the one I'm riding.

37456 423 Mighty Water Dragon: 21 Roy Stewart Mar 29, 2012 2012-03-29T07:51:15-0400 Well I wish I had a picture of the place I built the original Dragon board in... . a wrecked bus covered in corrugated iron with odd sheets of plywood for a floor, parked on a 40 acre block of industrial land 200 yards from the beach, surrounded by scrub and wrecked cars... no electricity, no running water. Those were, as they say, the days.
37465 423 Mighty Water Dragon: 22 jonzer Mar 30, 2012 2012-03-30T01:33:43-0400 In that case, it's a miscarriage that the museum considers the "centerpiece" to be American memorabilia from surfing legend Dora. You should at least get a footnote.

Well, Paulownia wood is Chinese, Roy also has Chinese ancestry a very sharp Miao Dao, Zhan Ma Dao and Qiang with Waxwood shaft. I hope that this helps, however the point is that writing in the third person is more detached than writing in the first person, and is perfectly polite. On all our other major roads we have square raised reflectors on the centre line, approx every 10-20mtrs or so. More to been seen than felt i think.

39003 423 Mighty Water Dragon: 90 Guest May 27, 2012 2012-05-27T13:04:05-0400 Roy's fancy pictures don't change the fact that those shell bumps increase the surface area of the fin. Doesn't surface area increase drag? isn't this why you set your fins the way you do Roy ?
39004 423 Mighty Water Dragon: 91 kiwi May 27, 2012 2012-05-27T13:04:24-0400 We all have different beliefs. I've only posted yours, no others. Probably because yours are the only negative ones i've had.

Click to expand... They are called tubercules. Doesn't surface area increase drag? Click to expand... tubercules increase surface area but reduce overall drag. isn't this why you set your fins the way you do Roy ? Click to expand... Your statement is too vague to answer, rephrase it please.

It's 'principles' and the tubercules obey them, of course. as if you can measure your claim in concert with all the other aspects of your creations!!!! laughable!! Click to expand... The drag reduction has been proven scientifically many times, and is easily noticeable in the water when surfing... the increase in power and accuracy is dramatic. if you do your homework, including brushing up on your spelling, a more reasonable conversation might ensue. how many of you have seen a whale surfing? Thought I would take Roy's lead and screw with a thread with comments that are repugnant and out of context. This being a troll is sort of fun, now I see why Roy has made a career of it. Maybe I'll share some stories from my friends that know Roy well. Seems he is not held in high regard by those that have to interact with him in person.
