353277 22227 Michael Miller Surfboards 6 PricklyPears Jun 4, 2025 2025-06-04T12:14:39-0400 Picked up a 9'2" Drifter in December and enjoyed it in Socal for a couple of weeks before bringing home to TX. I'm a bigger guy with variable paddling fitness, so other dims are beyond stock at 22 3/4" and 3 1/8". Also asked for shallower than normal concaves given our typically soft Gulf waves. After feeling up other Drifters in his shop, wondering if stock would've been fine. No remorse though, the board is awesome. She was buttery as heck on a bright March day in Surfside, waist high and 10 sec. The Gulf dream haha. Looking forward to more of that. And more MM boards too! He thought the Nozzle would go great here.

I placed an order in April for an eagle, he's sent me photos and updates as it's come along. Talked to him recently about timeframe for completion and mentioned my family and I would be down in SD end of July... next thing you know he's going to me making me an 8’8 drifter that he said will be ready by the time we're down. Edit: I gotta stay off this thread. Too many good options from MM and now second guessing my choice.

I mostly surf a few empty and pretty remote reef/beach breaks or left points that tends to be on the slower and mushier side of things, but can get punchy and fast when things line up. Just searching for different feelings than I'm used to lately. I rode my friends 9'6" Larmo Big Swallow twin up here last summer a few times and absolutely fell in love with it, so have been searching for comparable feels and think the Nozzle will be dreamy in a similar way. Your description sounds like exactly what I'm after!

There is something highly addictive about carvy turns on an eight-foot twin fin. The longer rail, the weight, it gives you more of a deep-powder snowboard feel than a twitchy 5'10" twinny feel. Very addictive. Also, and everybody here knows it, but Michael is an all-around amazing human in all aspects. These boards will change your surfing for life. Tell your wife I say you have to have one.

Click to expand... my two cents, a nozzle has a top gear that it unmatched, but a drifter gets rail to rail a bit easier although i know people who will say the opposite and have a hard time turning the deeper fs/drifter bottom. Personal preference? Im also not light, 210/215. A favorite board is a nozzle outline with a single to double bottom (not drifter deep) and an inch narrower tail block. AKA the frankenfish. The Frankenfish! What a board. Yeah it was an 11" tail block like the nozzle with fin placement for a twin (not a keel) and we put the egg bottom single to double concave on it. That board was a winner for sure. MM has since made me the same idea sort of board but at 6'9" and it is awesome with S wing keels in it.

After riding a lot of Larmo's big swallows and enjoying the more mellow bottom contours, I had Michael make me two Fish outlines with 11" tails and swish bottoms. These both got keels. Michael makes way more boards than just the models on his site. Remember, he used to shape and glass for Christenson so he has a background shaping (and surfing) a wide variety of boards. He does have a "performance rail" that he will put on boards that is much different from his more Cushman Ave/Skip Rail. My brother in law has him put it on boards from time to time and likes it. So, he's open to shaping a bunch of stuff in all fin set ups with all sorts of rails.

Miller, Mitsven, and many of the more popular shapers discussed on this forum have shaping bays at Cushman Ave in San Diego, so they are a few doors down, but he has his own shop. He used to shape and glass but he glasses at G&S now, I think to keep up with the volume of boards he is making. I hear glassing is a lot of work too. Definitely a skip protege, pretty much every model on his site is a skip shape or his interpretation of one.

After working for Chris, I took over his old factory in the Bay Park/Linda Vista area when he decided to move to San Marcos next to the iconic Moonlight Glassing in 2008. I have been working in the same location since then shaping and glassing all of my own boards. Recently I have had to start using other glassing factories to help with the demand. I still do quality control on boards I get glassed at other factories. From the first time I shaped a board in 1999 I wanted to know how to build surfboards from start to finish. I thought all shapers knew how to do this so I felt like I needed to learn how to make a showroom quality shape and glass job. This limited production but helped me control quality which is what matters to me. I like to shape all kinds of boards…

Any issues with the glassing done at G&S or other places he uses, or is this just something you'd prefer because he did such a good job it's a rare and special thing to have a board done start to finish by one person nowadays? That might be a cool idea for a new thread actually.

That immediate speed is so satisfying. Best paddling board I've ever had and it just flys down the line. Running the NVS skip keels in the back position and it feels a little sticky, and will buck you off if you try to force it around, but it glides so nice and is so fun to tune in and let it come around intuitively. Thinking I'm going to try some Grennans in the same position to see if it's just slightly looser while hopefully retaining that same energy and momentum. Love this board. Image processing. Mostly for the length and hold. With the fuller nose it could be ridden in less desirable conditions but the pulled in pin offered great hold in steeper conditions.
