279550 15673 Larry Mabile Surfboards 1 SD_PB Apr 22, 2023 2023-04-22T15:52:52-0400 I read through the thread on MOTE Surfboards and thought it’d be nice to do one for Larmo. Very fortunate to have grown up with a direct connection to him (shoutout to my neighbor Gary) and have gotten to ride a a lot of his boards. I wanted to share my experiences on his boards below. Would love to hear all of your thoughts and experiences on Larry Mabile boards as well 5’6 Keel Fin Fish: Super fun and very fast. Feels like you’re riding a skateboard on water. Traditional SD fish rails. Projects very well down the line and goes on rail very smoothly. Only issues I’ve ever had with it is spinning out by pushing too hard and trying to stall out to barrel ride. Love the board and have ridden it in everything from stomach high to OH 5’7 Twinzer Fish: One of my favorite boards. Knifier rails than my other keel fin fish from him. I run it as my good wave board. Loves a very pitchy, round face - I only really ride it in clean conditions. The board sticks in the wave and cuts through the water like nothing else I’ve experienced. Holds so well that it feels like I’m standing on a sidewalk and is very responsive. Love this board and will never sell it. We are bonded at the soul haha 5’9 Keel Fin Fish: Much like my 5’6 fish except a little bit boxier and with more float. I generally ride this when I want to ride a fish but am too lazy to paddle something smaller. 6’10 Twinzer Fish: Really fun midlength to ride when waves start to pick up. Goes better at points than it does at the beaches. Shaped like a speed fish, with wings and a more pulled in tail. Definitely can turn but prefers to trim down the line in the pocket 7’ 1+2 Honey Badger: Another one of my favorites. Needs a little more punch to get going but once it’s going you never want to get off it. I generally ride this at the reefs when it starts to get chest high and above. Makes big drop ins feel like nothing, turns extremely well, and glides like butter. My favorite board during the winter 8’6 Quad Diamond …

I've heard amazing things about the white pony with a twinzer setup. I've been hesitant because I mainly ride noseriders and there is a lot of overlap between the two, in my opinion. Definitely should pull the trigger and try it though You probably could order a new one if you're still really missing it. He comes up from his place in Mexico and shapes at birds fairly often. I've also heard that he is making a little shaping bay at his place down there too

I'm dying to try one of his double eagle gliders. They look very sweet. I have a friend with a Larmo tri fin double eagle (not a glider) and I think I'm going to steal it off him for a while His fish and badger are magic. His baby badgers seem pretty sweet too. Someone at one of the breaks I surf at has a 6'4 twinzer baby badger and it looks ridiculously fun

They feel a little sluggish in smaller surf but work when things start to get shoulder high and above. I've enjoyed them at both reefs and beaches as well

Had a 7'2 twinzer/single that would get going in smaller surf as a twinzer, but it was at its best when the swell picked up.

279747 15673 Larry Mabile Surfboards 23 Chilly Willy Apr 25, 2023 2023-04-25T08:55:40-0400 I've got a 5'10" twin keel fish shaped by Larmo branded as a Basic Element (a local company from the early 2000s). It's an amazing board and is the yardstick by which I measure all other fish. Not that I've ridden a ton of them, but I've been on a few others and just didn't get along with them like I do with the Larmo. It is shockingly fast -- so much so that if I haven't ridden it in a while, my first wave usually involves the board rocketing out from under me like I slipped on a banana peel. When I started shaping, my fish had quite a few repairs done over the years, so I was coming to grips with the reality that it would have a finite lifespan. My goal was to be able to spin up a clone of that board (I think at the time he had retired or stopped shaping). I made two -- one for myself and one for a buddy. I came pretty close, but the rails just aren't quite the same. Just couldn't get them quite as nice as he does.

Can you tell me a little more about it? Click to expand... A tale of 2 eagles... I have a Josh Hall and my buddy has a Mabile. Both 11 feet. The Mabile is much more user friendly. Both glide like crazy but the Larmo has a more constant outline curve and tamer bottom contours. The Hall has more extreme concaves, sharper rails and has more of the parallel rails through the middle outline. This makes the Hall extremely fast when things line up just right but the Mabile works better in average conditions. I compare them like this: The Hall is more like the most recent Skip Frye Eagles and the Mabile is like the Frye's from the 90's that I have seen. If I was going to order one I would go with Larmo. You ride them mostly from the tail. Unlike a normal longboard, they don't seem to speed up when you move up to trim and then you are just further from the tail which is where you need be to turn the sucker!

Both are his "Eggstacy" model. 8'2" and 6'6" with Diamond tail option. Spent a lot of time on the 8'2" as a Twinzer, twin and single. Larmo/Jenson for the Twinzer, Christine/furrow for the twin and 8" L Flex. The Twinzer is rad and I prefer it in head high+, or faster beach break. It offers early entry with extra length, great hold and speed to beat sections. I find it a bit sticky in smaller/slower conditions, so I switch to the furrows and they work really well. I've had that board in a bunch of different conditions and it's really neutral with egg outline, rocker, rail design and bottom contours. The 6'6" is my short board and is a blast. Need to spend more time on it as it's a newer custom, but last few outings have been rad in 2-4 ft beach break. Great speed and control with that familiar egg shape.

I didn't give the fish much of a try because I already had the Ghostbuster and liked that one so much. I sort of regret giving the fish back up so quickly. I rode the ghostbuster to death. Originally had these cheap fins on it and later put some McCallum quads that worked well in it for me. It was the first sub 6' board that I ever tried and I was surprised how easy it was to surf and how well it paddled. It was a blast from waist to head high. I've since replaced it with a NL Minibob just to try something new but would highly recommend the Ghostbuster.

The Twinzer is rad and I prefer it in head high+, or faster beach break. It offers early entry with extra length, great hold and speed to beat sections. I find it a bit sticky in smaller/slower conditions, so I switch to the furrows and they work really well. 283551 15673 Larry Mabile Surfboards 96 SD_TO zone Jun 9, 2023 2023-06-09T17:28:44-0400 I used to have a 7’ Larmo modern machine style as a 2+1 - ran it as a single with a 7.5 skip volan and have a 8’ thin man currently as a thruster. It went good but was a bit thicker and fuller overall than a thin man. More foam to the rail and a thicker tail and a little bit wider nose than the thin man. Solid board but I like the thin man more. I have mine with small skip thrusters and sometimes use TA boomerangs to mix it up. The longer length allows me to trim out and let it run easier while the thruster keeps it maneuverable. In my mind it would be similar to like a fish Simmons at that length (8’) and it does like when you can have some power in the wave as the tail is very thin and not super wide and the nose width is similar to like a pulled in magic or similar. Ridden it at beach breaks and reefs from like knee to about shoulder/head high so far. It’s an all time and special board for me and while the modern machine was really good also it didn’t give me the same feeling the thin man does. But I’ve always had a soft spot for thin man style shapes so that could play a part.
