| 208700 | 10544 | Surf Craft Union Surfboard Review | 1 | Hodaddy81 | May 29, 2021 | 2021-05-29T08:18:16-0400 | Hello Jammers, I had some people interested in my platform on this forum so I wanted to keep everyone in the loop. I developed a different way of reviewing surfboards with more of a slight story line. 3 For 30 was developed to give a real and unbiased review of both underground shapers and also national brands. 3 different boards surfed for 30 days by an average surfer in average surf. I just released episode 2 of my surfboard reviews and if your interested in checking it out I attached a link below. FOR THE RECORD: It was never my intention to use Jamboards as a way to promote my SCU review. I posted a link in a forum speaking about a particular board I reviewed and the response was very positive. So with that said I appreciate the support from anyone interested in checking it out. After watching the two episodes you have listed, I would suggest using some softer introduction music. The hard rock approach may work well for surf movies trying to embellish charging big waves or whatever, but a little harsh for a review program, in my opinion that is. Secondly, you might want to think about adding another surfer's perspective in conjunction with your own opinion. It doesn't have to be that "point/counterpoint" approach, but two people who can come to an agreement on the pros and cons most of the time might be more helpful to those of us who are really looking for some guidance with a particular product. Thirdly, please keep it apolitical. I am not suggesting that you are not doing that now. However, if something digresses into "product placement", people will soon pick up on that. Good luck and keep them coming. |

Issue is trying to keep the length at a decent timeframe without really hitting the 45 minute range. Music wise I am looking to switch around in the future. There is a strong music scene in my area that I am trying to help out. Product placement is gross your absolutely right. But I am just talking about products that I use in my everyday life that people often ask me about. Again I do appreciate the feedback and I will certainly keep them coming. |

Click to expand... Both boards are completely different both in bottom contours, technology, and outline. I really vibe with the Hailey for sure. I really liked the glider speed it had but also turned from the tail. The fact that the nose is a comfortable outline for stretch 5s really surprised me. Also taking out that middle fin and surfing it with the little side bites made it really fun. As I said in the video the Tri Plane, chimed rails, and low tail rocker make it super fun as a finless alternative. Plus my favorite feature the ability to duck dive it! |

Been curious about the Twin Pin - great to see some smart content on it. I have a 7'1" Twin egg that's flat and thick and a great groveler / all rounder but it can't really handle steep stuff, esp backside. Next board I want a twin that's a few inches smaller, a hair more rocker and with more performance rails. Will probably go custom - but have been eyeballing the twin pin. After riding it for a month - how do you think it will handle being stretched // ballooned out to a 6'8" or 6'9"? Thx |

I think if you go Custom and the shaper understands what you what it should work great. This is the 6'10 x 21.5 x 2.6 I told you i had ordered. Epoxy glassed, full shortboard concaves in the bottom, paddles great but rails are nicely foiled out. It works so well and is definitely on the performance side rather than the retro Cruise Side of things - it feels like a big short board. sorry thread hijack! Another hesitation with a twin pin is the tail in smaller stuff… suspect it’d be hard to pump on: not much of a platform for speed generation. Another board thats appealing is the lane splitter from Christenson. Seems like he’s figured out the best of both from the reviews I’ve read. Not sure that's worth the $1500 or whatever the hell a custom christenson is gonna cost haha Click to expand... I think the shape called it a rounded squash but essentially it's the same thing. This was a full custom so I had several phone calls talking the shape over including one after I'd seen the first cut from the machine. Essentially the shaper already had a slightly rounder nosed version. We kept the tail shape like that to give it more low end but pulled the nose for reduced swing weight and aesthetics too if I'm honest. Realistically it's not gonna get used in stand up barrels so I felt a full pin wouldn't gain much and would lose smaller wave drive like you say. Lane splitter looks like it has similar ideas but tops out at 6'0 Back on topic, it'd be interesting to have an episode where you compared all the different mids you've had on. |

It's a really fun board, very fast and I found the marketing pitch about the reverse vee helping to instill confidence on drop-ins to actually be true. Maybe just psychological b/c I read it first, but this board has given me confidence on larger surf as it feels really stable. Click to expand... Interesting. I have 7'6" egg as a thruster that's my winter board. Thing feels rock solid in big surf. I bought a twin + trailer set for it - been messing around with it this summer in mushy shoulder high stuff. We'll see if I have the stones come winter to drop in - in that set up when its big. Thing gets up to speed so fast. Do you ever feel out of control, speed-wise, on the twin when it gets big? |

Decent review too, but am I the only one who thinks the board looked a bit small for that guy? I'm sure another couple inches would have helped the flow out on the face a bit with no loss of manoeuvrability. |

I guess if it's punchy surf and you're an advanced surfer like he is - volume doesn't really matter - board's gonna get going. That's shortboarders, tho - they love attacking the wave and working for that speed. haha. But I agree on length - I think a 6'8-6'10' would be a great sweet spot for that outline. Bringing it back to the topic at hand (sorry!! @Hodaddy81 ) - The CI Twin Pin stock dims go all the way up to 6'9" - but I'm still a little dubious it would work as intended at that length. |

Something was lost when the average shortboard length dropped 5in... the flow and the aesthetic changed I think, and not for the better in many cases. Watching Beau Cram surf the same board is a pleasure, it looks right. |

Another hesitation with a twin pin is the tail in smaller stuff… suspect it'd be hard to pump on: not much of a platform for speed generation. Another board thats appealing is the lane splitter from Christenson. Seems like he's figured out the best of both from the reviews I've read. Not sure that's worth the $1500 or whatever the hell a custom christenson is gonna cost haha Click to expand... Hey mate, I loosened up a longfish by getting a set of s wings twin fin set- it came with k2's which were fine but felt tracky. The s wings actually do what the marketing hype says, which was both refreshing and surprising, it feels like the board is 10% faster and on open faced waves roundhouse cutbacks are a dream. A set could certainly open up new lines on a christenson or CI twin pin |

Which in my opinion makes a big difference especially in the waves that I surfed it in for this particular review. Again both amazing boards. The Haley is making me explore longer versions of it soon!! The v bowls actually kinda inspired me to dive back into those involvement style logs again too. Results to follow. |

I did ride a Jacobs Takayama Stepdeck(I assume he was the shaper of those) that was exceptional, but that Bing DT model was horrid. Perhaps one of the worst designs I ever came across. As far as his more modern boards, they were just so so from my standpoint. There were a lot of other boards being build by other shapers during that part of his life that I liked much better. However, one has to be careful of assuming what was going on between 1967 and July of 1968 when from my perspective, was the beginning of the end for the classic longboard era. After that it was almost a nuclear winter for longboards. Everything was transitional from that point forward. Emphasis on nose riding was starting to phase out by the beginning of 1967 because of the influence of Nat Young and the "Magic Sam" board from 1966. The emphasis was heading more towards performance and maneuverability thus the transition into V bottoms and forward. The Hansen "Competitor" was a model that was very similar to what many of the established manufacturers were coming out with and not that unique for that period. One only had to look and the Morey Pope Peck Penetrator and the Con Ugly for those extreme tail rocker boards that preceded the Hansen Competitor. They would borrow ideas from one another when … |
