Many people (former baseball players mainly) find it pretty easy to hit a ball well, it's the getting it to go straight that takes some practice/ replacing old baseball swing muscle memory with 'golf swing'.   Figuring out your swing/how far you hit can be done at the range without any lessons, especially with what information/tips are available online .   Playing mainly at executive/par 3 courses until you are comfortable with your irons before advancing to needing to hit the driver every hole will definitely help.  And buy cheap (used) balls, they wont last more than a few holes for the first year or two.  If you want faster results 1 v 1 lessons at the range with someone who takes the swing you have and works to improve it, but it can be pricey.
