That doesn't mean that they won't fill up eventually. If they don't fill up, that's a good thing. It means what we are doing (sheltering in place here in CA) is working. Here are some reasons you don't see lines around the block at your local hospital:\n\n\n\n\n\n\nElective procedures have been canceled to free up space and preserve PPE\n\n\nPatients are being discharged early to free up space and to preserve PPE\n\n\nPeople are on lockdown. Less car accidents, workplace accidents, people practicing better hygiene = less other sickness. For example, one local San Diego hospital has had influenza and other respiratory illnesses down 84%. That's because less exposure (people are home), and more hand washing. \n\n\nMany typical ER patients are low income who don't have health insurance. They use the Emergency Dept as a safety net because they don't have anywhere else to go.
