Any tips/ideas for surfing/sightseeing the area? One week, family, no rental car. Surfing with my 14yo son. Playa Avellanas looks walking distance (10 min) to the south. Tamarindo to the north but would have to be by shuttle I would guess. Any surf out front of the resort? Now we have to watch out for gators...sheesh. Bad enough here in CA lately with the sea creatures. Any help is greatly appreciated. Lot's of peaks everywhere, have the poke ceviche at the restaurant with the huge pig(don't know if it's still there). Playa Negra can be hardcore but if you have the skills it's a good barrel. Don't care much for Tamarindo because it's too touristy but maybe I am spoiled(was there in 1993 before it became a tourist town). If you can extend the trip or have the time to take 2 days visit the Arenal volcanoe, it's a unique experience to watch an active volcano at night, you probably need a car but driving in CR is pretty safe if you stay on the road. I was at the Westin in Playa Conchal for my honeymoon in 2012. Super nice. No surf where I was, but we took a shuttle to Tamarindo one day so I could squeeze in a little surf session. We did a fun little excursion one day: zip lines, horseback riding, hot springs, and a crazy waterslide through the jungle where you have to wear a helmet and a rubber diaper to ride it. We still talk about that waterslide. Surprisingly, the best part was the horseback ride. Besides clomping through streams on some really neat, tight rain forest trails, it was my first time on a horse and was a lot more fun than I thought it would be controlling the big beast. I think the excursion was called Buena Vista if you want to look it up. The cool thing about Costa Rica is that there's plenty to do and you can have a much or as little adventure as you'd like. Have fun!"], ["100027", "2799", "Costa Rica Trip", 5, "Surfin64", "Jul 25, 2016", "2016-07-25T12:09:40-0400", "Thanks slideright. If the shuttle will get us there then tamarindo river mouth looks fun. Isn't that where the recent croc attack was? If so... maybe we may want to pass. Tony I believe you are talking about Lola's (pig/restaurant) which is on our to do list. I hear Avellanas is a nice mix of different waves/bottoms. We'll check out the feasibility of a trip to the volcano. Chilly thanks for the info. I am pretty sure my wife was talking about a tour just like what you described. We'll definitely find out more.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore questions: Are booties/ankle high reef shoes a good or necessary item to pack? It seems the breaks are a combo or sand, volcanic rock and reef. Also, my son rides a short board so he's set. How would a 7'6\" do for his old man? The rivermouth is a nice right with swell on incoming tide. Otherwise Playa Grande to the north (again, dont cross the rivermouth on foot.. there's pangas that will shuttle you across), or as other mentioned Avellanas.
