If you can extend the trip or have the time to take 2 days visit the Arenal volcanoe, it's a unique experience to watch an active volcano at night, you probably need a car but driving in CR is pretty safe if you stay on the road. I was at the Westin in Playa Conchal for my honeymoon in 2012.  Super nice.  No surf where I was, but we took a shuttle to Tamarindo one day so I could squeeze in a little surf session.  We did a fun little excursion one day: zip lines, horseback riding, hot springs, and a crazy waterslide through the jungle where you have to wear a helmet and a rubber diaper to ride it.  We still talk about that waterslide.  Surprisingly, the best part was the horseback ride.  Besides clomping through streams on some really neat, tight rain forest trails, it was my first time on a horse and was a lot more fun than I thought it would be controlling the big beast.  I think the excursion was called Buena Vista if you want to look it up.  The cool thing about Costa Rica is that there's plenty to do and you can have a much or as little adventure as you'd like. I surfed one exclusively in the type of NJ waves you are describing.  Mine was 9'6\", stock. The PTLW was much more durable than you would think.  I am heavier than  you and I had no issues with pressure dents on the deck.  My Austin started from his Signature model plan shape and went from there. The Signature model was a 4 or 5 fin setup, I believe, but mine is a single.  Based on what I have seen, I am sure that Matt could build you what you want.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChilly Willy:  Nice catch.  It matches the pin line. It's plenty maneuverable with a sweep type fin and has held up well with the stock glass job.  In my opinion weight is not your friend in a steeper break.  I had a triple stringer Infinity custom that I sold because of the weight.  I haven't found a condition the Bing didn't work in. Surfed it when I got it in California on reef breaks and it did well and surf it here in Texas at pier and jetty beach breaks and it does fine.  Have had it out in good size hurricane surf with no problem. Lots of longboards, but definitely less of the traditional style.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMy primary theory: fewer surfers, less shaper-centered culture compared to CA, and therefore greater predominance of mass-market type boards (Stewarts, Surftechs, etc.)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMy secondary theory:  although the waves are usually small, they are choppy, unpredictable and often outright crappy. Many transitional log designs are not necessarily ideal in crap conditions. I personally found it easier to ride a lighter, more \"modern\" longboard there and found my dedicated noserider poorly suited to conditions most of the time. Also noticed most of the best local loggers rode boards with more rocker and contemporary design features than one would expect for a hotshot.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDunno if this theory holds for places on the East Coast that have *better* waves tho.
